We’re A Tree
WORDS Danny Denton / SONG Lisa Hannigan & Seán McErlaine / VOICE Lisa Hannigan
According to myth, the first poem recited in Ireland was Amhairgin’s ‘Song’, in which he invoked the whole land of Ireland, calling upon its spirit to come over from the Tuatha Dé Danann to the human settlers. Ireland has been ‘ours’ since, but maybe we haven’t been as kind to the land as we should have been.
Written for children, We’re a Tree is a sort of re-imagining/reclamation of Amhairgin’s Song, a kind of invocation for our kids to take back the earth we messed about. It’s about re-connecting with the trees and the land, and perhaps renewing the ancient vow to live sympathetically with nature. Hopefully it’s fun too!
